Emergency Medical Technician/ Field Training Officer
Job Summary:
EMT's will be tasked with providing EMT- Basic level pre-hospital care to patients, in accordance with the most up to date Massachusetts Statewide Treatment protocols, as well as the additional scope of practice provided within the department’s affiliation agreement with Berkshire Medical Center. EMT's will have daily duties consisting of light maintenance/ grounds work, as well as other daily tasks on an as needed basis assigned by the EMS Director. Additionally, the Field Training Officer duties would also include oversight of new hires or providers under probationary review in the field and clearance of said providers to the field.

*Full time- Minimum 80 hours bi-weekly Salary Range $24.75-$25.50 per hour based on experience. ($24.00 until orientation is complete)
*All positions require a minimum 64 hours per month for Saturday and Sunday Shifts. Overtime pay at time and half pay rate!
Work Environment:
EMTs will have duties consisting of patient care and transportation, these conditions will be dependent on situation including but not limited to weather, and location which may vary from ideal to hazardous. EMTs will make frequent contact with the public, other emergency services, and hospital personnel, staff are expected to remain professional at all times. Errors could endanger persons and property, cause delay of services, have legal or financial repercussions, and result in adverse public relations. EMTs will perform custodial duties requiring a moderate degree of responsibility, and judgement. EMTs will operate emergency vehicles to and from scenes, and are expected to function in a responsible manner. EMTs will operate on emergency scene in the role of EMS, search, rescue and more as needed. The field of emergency services experiences many unknowns, the potential for required overtime may occur, specifically but not limited to “late” calls during scheduled shifts, or incidents that require a prolonged response.
Field Training Officer Duties:
FTO supervises new hires/probationary employees in the field as a member of an ambulance crew. The FTO supervises the activities of EMT’s and First Responders in the field and reports progress on a shift by shift basis. The FTO will be responsible for training the new hire/probationary employee in all facets of their job using the Orientation Sign Off as a guide to what is taught to the new hires/probationary employees. When the FTO deems that the new hire/probationary employee is competent, clearance will be recommended to be reviewed by the EMS Director for approval. The FTO is responsible for finishing all required FTO training required or requested by the EMS Director.
EMT Essential Functions:
EMTs will respond to medical calls for service, providing treatment and transport of all patients within the Massachusetts Statewide Treatment protocols, at the EMT- Basic level. Maintain minimum standards for emergency equipment and emergency vehicles at the Lanesborough Ambulance. Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting floors, carpets, furniture etc, will be required as needed. Cleaning and sanitizing restrooms, and replenishing supplies as needed. EMTs will maintaining the interior and exterior of the Lanesborough Ambulance Department, as well as the yards, and sidewalks adjacent throughout each season as necessary, including but not limited to lawn care, snow and ice removal. Emptying and relining refuse and recycling containers regularly will also be expected. EMTs will be responsible for but not limited to the above tasks, and may be assigned further duties as seen fit by the EMS Director.
Physical Requirements:
EMTs are expected to be able to carry, balance, and manipulate equipment and patients up to 125 pounds unassisted. The ability to carry, lift, support, or position patients, including those incapable independent movements. The ability to bend, stoop, balance, and crawl on even and uneven terrain. EMTs will also expect to have the ability to balance while lifting, moving, and positioning patients and equipment while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment. EMTs shall possess the visual acuity necessary to perform technical skills. EMTs shall possess fine motor and hand-eye-foot coordination required performing technical and precise skills. EMTs shall possess sufficient verbal, and auditory perception to be able to perform comprehensive patient assessment, management and transport. The ability to interpret and respond to written, and oral instructions, communications, or descriptions. The ability to converse via phone, radio, and in-person with patients, families, bystanders, and other healthcare or emergency service providers is necessary. At times, EMTs may be exposed to hazardous weather or other severe conditions in the field. Custodial duties involve light to moderate physical effort. A pre-employment drug and physical screening will be required all candidates as the ability to meet the physical requirements of a demanding position are crucial to the life and safety of employees, colleagues and the general public. Physical requirements can be updated at any point as seen fit by the EMS Director.
Education, Experience, and Ability:
EMTs must at a minimum possess a high school diploma, or equivalent (GED). EMTs are expected to possess and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver’s license, with a clean driving record, as well as National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) and/ or Massachusetts EMT-Basic certification. The knowledge of the most current Massachusetts Pre-Hospital Statewide Treatment protocols as well as regulations pertaining to Massachusetts Ambulance Law. A minimum of 5 years’ experience as an EMT is preferred, though all candidates will be considered based off of experience. The ability to communicate effectively, maintain organization, and work unsupervised is necessary.
